Biography

Dr Susan Collings holds a PhD from the University of Sydney and a Master of Public Health from UNSW. She brings a professional background working in the community care field. Her applied, interdisciplinary research addresses complex and intersecting inequalities that impact on socially disadvantaged children and families. Susan has led and contributed to large mixed methods research with governments, non-government and community organisations to enhance integrated system and service responses and improve practice in areas such as disability support planning, family group conferencing, birth family contact and parenting capacity assessment.  As a highly experienced qualitative researcher, Susan uses on a toolkit of participatory, inclusive and arts-based methods to offer new modes of storytelling and is committed to amplifying child and youth voice and participation in research. Her work draws on social ecological theory and intersectionality to explore factors that influence children's opportunities to thrive in safe and supported environments. Susan is known for her research on parenting with intellectual disability and is an active member of Australian and international research and advocacy groups that seek to promote ethical practice to support and uphold the rights of parents with intellectual disability and their children.
