City Shaping Projects -  Opportunities & Challenges

The delivery of large Government funded city shaping building projects is getting more challenging. These challenges include maintaining project momentum over election cycles (Local, State, Federal), End User capabilities to define the Project needs, Sourcing appropriate sites, obtaining approvals and securing the Contractors who have the capability, subcontractor/supplier networks and the financial and management capacity to deliver world class large scale complex building projects.

Using Case Studies such as the new Brisbane International terminal (1993 to 1996), the Sydney 2000 Olympic Village (1997 to 2000) and the Powerhouse Parramatta (2022 to 2024) to convey the changing delivery models and complexity and the opportunities to be explored with the Universities in Engineering, Construction and Built Form environment to meet the Industry skillset requirements to address the challenges of delivering large city shaping Projects

Biography

Simon Pagett is currently working for Infrastructure NSW responsible for the delivery of the new Powerhouse Museum in Parramatta the largest investment in a cultural facility since the Sydney Opera House.

Simon has decades of experience in building and leading teams, managing a diverse portfolio of complex, large-scale infrastructure and urban renewal projects. Prior to Infrastructure NSW, Simon was  Head of Urban transformation at Urban Growth overseeing the delivery of major urban renewal projects such as the Green Square redevelopment.

Before Urban Growth, Simon has held senior roles at Lendlease during a 27 year career, including General Manager of Development in the Retirement Living and Aged Care division, and  General Manager of Communities in NSW and ACT.  He has worked on numerous high-profile infrastructure projects, including Brisbane’s new International Airport Terminal and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Village at Homebush.

Simon holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering) from the University of New South Wales and is a licensed real estate agent.

Challenging and improving the image of construction – a Builder’s perspective

With Australia in the midst of a near-crisis-level Construction workforce shortage, the time is now to actively address recruitment, retention and diversity in the Industry. Natalie will offer a builder’s perspective and personal views on the issues present in the Industry and ways in which the image can be improved by way of Construction Professionals’ engagement with early school leavers and Academia.


Biography

Natalie has broad exposure to the built environment across the architecture, design and construction management industries. Joining Multiplex as a Graduate in 2012, she has worked on some of the business’ most complex projects, which has seen her trajectory to her current role as Senior Project Engineer on Western Sydney Airport. Having worked on the Integrated Fitout of the iconic Quay Quarter Tower, Stockland Shopping Centre Merrylands, Mark Moran Aged Care at Vaucluse and several of the University of NSW projects located on the busy Kensington campus, Natalie holds strong client, stakeholder and consultant experience across various industry sectors.

Prior to joining Multiplex, Natalie notably interned at Frank Gehry’s Los Angeles Studio as an Architectural Assistant and worked on the design development of the University of Technology Sydney’s Dr Chau Chak Wing Building.
