Right to Information

The Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (NSW) (GIPA Act) gives the public a right to access information held by NSW government agencies, including universities.

The Act promotes open, accountable and transparent government, with a general presumption in favour of disclosure unless there is an overriding public interest against release.

The University supports the proactive release of information wherever possible.

How to access information

In most cases, information can be accessed without a formal access application.

1. Search existing information

2. Request information informally
Where possible, the University provides information informally through relevant Schools or Divisional Units.

3. Access your own personal information
Requests for your own personal information (e.g. staff or student records) can be obtained from:

4. Formal GIPA application or Internal Review (if required)
A formal access application may be made under the GIPA Act where information cannot be accessed through other means.

Applications are assessed in accordance with the public interest test, which determines whether information is released or withheld. The GIPA Act also sets out the process for access applications and options for internal review of decisions.

Use the Online GIPA Register to submit a formal access application or request an internal review of a decision on an access application.
