Research Theme Champion Recruitment Opportunity

Please note: Recruitment for Research Theme Champion positions will resume in June 2024.

The Research Theme Program is seeking three new Theme Champions to commence in the first quarter of 2024. We are looking for enthusiastic, altruistic, and experienced colleagues at Levels D and E to fill the vacancy in each of the following Research Themes:

  • Environment & Sustainability
  • Urban Living Futures & Society

Hands-on Research Grant Scheme

This grant provides funding (up to $12,000) to support the ideas and initiatives of Early Career Researchers (ECRs). It is available to ECRs only and aims to invigorate creativity and enthusiasm when beginning your research career. For the purpose of this grant, an ECR is defined as an academic who has been awarded their PhD up to a maximum of 5 years ago (career interruptions may apply). Funds can be used to support research activities that directly benefit the Western Sydney region. As indicated by the name of the grant, its purpose is to support on-ground research by funding ‘research tools’ that are currently out of reach and will allow you to develop your own ideas and research profile. Calls for applications open once a year in the second quarter and will be announced on Yammer and via the Research Services Update newsletter. In 2024, applications for the grant can be submitted until CoB on 26 April. Please read the guidelines before you complete the EoI form.

Research Grant Assistance Scheme

The Research Grant Assistance Scheme has closed for 2024 funding and will return in the last quarter of 2024 for funding projects in 2025.

The Research Grant Assistance Scheme provides financial support for researchers in Schools and Institutes to apply for either Category 1, 2 or 3 grants. The research must align with the Research Themes of Education & Work; Health & Wellbeing; Environment & Sustainability and/or Urban Living Futures & Society. Western Sydney University must be the lead on the application; academics from more than one cluster must be involved; and the team must include an early or mid-career researcher. Applications must include at least one external partner from an industry or government organisation.

Funding up to $10,000 (single Research Theme application) or $20,000 (multiple Research Theme application) will be provided to employ research assistance, pilot studies, participant costs etc. The funds are not to be used for capital equipment purchases, travel, or to extend an existing employment contract. Calls for applications open once a year in the fourth quarter to support work in the following year.

These involve a 1-hour chat with  Freya MacMillan focused on entrepreneurship, sustainability and industry partnerships in relation to one of your programs of research. The chat is used to create a canvas map that is given to you to assist with your research planning into the future. These chats can be done with anyone regardless of their research area.
