Please join us in congratulating  Dr. Nicholas  Jose on the publication of his novel The Idealist, his first novel since Original Face (2005). His new work continues the themes of exploring Australia's place in the world in times of conflict, and the changes wrought in the lives of individual who are impacted by them. Dr. Nicholas Jose is an Adjunct Professor at the centre, and the Emeritus Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Adelaide. He has had a long and celebrated career as an academic, essayist, and novellist, including the publication of seven novels, and three collections of short stories.

His new work of fiction is set against the turmoil of the independence movement in East Timor. The narrative is told from changing perspectives, moving through time and memory, in search of what really happened. It is a story, above all, about the formation, necessity and human cost of idealism.
