Impact of probiotics on metabolic function and digestive health

NICM Health Research Institute

Lead Researcher: Dr. Deep Bhuyan

About the project

The NICM Health Research Institute (NICM HRI) is offering a PhD scholarship to a highly motivated candidate to study the therapeutic role of a new probiotic product developed by our industry partner Theronomic Pty Ltd. The project is co-funded through the Graduate Research School and the industry partner.

Our research group- The GutBiotics Lab at NICM HRI is investigating the mechanistic role of gut microbiota and its metabolites (also known as "postbiotics") in human health. The PhD student will conduct a randomised controlled trial at HRI to test the efficacy and tolerability of the probiotic product for weight management and improving metabolic function and digestive health. The student will gain expertise in conducting preclinical studies using different cellular, microbial, and molecular models to test other probiotic products from the industry partner. This project will address the target research area- Healthy Ageing of Western and NICM HRI to effectively prevent and treat age-related diseases and reduce their cost and impact on the health system. This co-designed project will be performed in close collaboration with the industry partner. The PhD student will have an external supervisor from the industry and have the wonderful opportunity to participate in a three-month internship program with the industry to build their skills beyond academia.

NICM HRI is one of the flagship research institutes of Western Sydney University. It is globally recognised for its "well above world standard" research and infrastructure by its Excellence in Research for Australia 5 ranking from the ARC for three consecutive trienniums. We have state-of-the-art preclinical laboratories for gut microbiome and molecular biology research and a clinical trial facility for the successful completion of this project.

What does the scholarship provide?
