What is the 21C project and why does it matter to students?
The 21C project came about because the University recognised that students need more than disciplinary-based knowledge, skills and training; they also need a hybrid set of capacities to help them flourish in a world and future working environment that is uncertain and constantly changing. These hybrid capacities are not just the basis for students’ creating their own successful futures; they are the foundation for enabling them to transform the world into a just, ethical and more live-able place.
The University doesn’t want students to graduate with only one destination in mind; it wants students to be able to adapt the skills and knowledge they have acquired for multiple purposes and destinations.
How will the student experience be different as a result of the 21C project?
The 21C project is creating new educational experiences for students that give them opportunities to develop these hybrid skills and capabilities. Depending on the degree you’re enrolled in, you are likely to have access to;
Over the next three years, more and more of these Curiosity Pods, Units and Sub-Majors will be developed for students, and co-created with students, to ensure they are relevant, attractive and engaging.
How are students participating in the 21C project?
One of the most distinctive and exciting elements of the 21C project is that students are partnering with staff and external partners to co-create and co-design these new experiences using an idea we call Partnership Pedagogy (opens in a new window). This means the teams of staff always have students in the room to generate ideas with, to test ideas against, and to challenge their ideas too. Our student curriculum partners have been part of the Future of Work and Curriculum Disruption (opens in a new window) forums, the Flagship Curriculum Projects (opens in a new window) and the 2018 Curriculum MakerSpaces (opens in a new window), and have co-created a number of major initiatives.
In 2017, the 21C project employed 8 student curriculum partners, which was extended to 11 in 2018, and to 14 in 2019. Some of our student cohort have now graduated so of the original cohort, we currently have 10 student partners. In February 2020, the 21C project will add another 16 students as partners working to co-create learning experiences as part of the Curriculum Challenges (opens in a new window). These 26 students will also work together in the Student Partnership X-Change Hub.

A portion of these students’ time each fortnight is devoted to Hub activities to establish and foster a strong student partnership cohort. These activities are likely to involve:
