ITU Child Online Protection Initiative

Online learning modules for children, teaching them to stay safe online

Our Vision

Children stand to maximise the opportunities found in digital world if they have the skills to keep themselves safe while exploring those environments. We collaborated with the National Cybersecurity Authority of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, ITU (International Telecommunications Union) and partners around the world to co-produce the Child Online Protection Trainings.

This project promotes a holistic approach to child online protection to build safe, gender-sensitive, age-appropriate, inclusive, and rights respecting digital environments for children and young people worldwide. The online self-paced trainings we developed are aimed at children (aged 9-12, 13-15 and 16-18) and cover the topics of Harassment, Mis/Dis information and Privacy.

Our Project Plan

We used our tried and tested youth consultation processes to involve young people from around the world as advisors to the content development for three age-appropriate learning modules on Harassment, Mis/Dis information and Privacy.

Young and Resilient performed three key functions on this project:

  1. We consulted with young people on the content and presentation of the learning modules,
  2. We developed the content for the modules using our online safety expertise, and
  3. We converted content into child-friendly language and learning scenarios. Online learning modules were then designed and produced by the ITU team.

What Impact will this research have?

Through these trainings on child online protection, children and young people gain insights on children's rights online, build a discussion around their safety in the digital environment, and access resources to deal with critical situations while online. The modules create a safe and empowering online environment for children and young people allowing them to realise the full range of their rights.
