Research Project Details

Gas based navigation is an area of active research because of its applications in safety and critical operations such as disaster management and environment monitoring, where visual navigation alone is limited. Currently, specially trained rescue dogs are used to locate casualties on disaster site. In this application, robotic solutions can be useful for locating toxic gas leaks and wildfires so that risk to animals and their handlers can be reduced.

Shavika's research objective is to develop an event based gas sensor and to devise algorithms for event based gas recognition and navigation. This event based sensor can be a power efficient and low cost solution for gas based navigation. This mobile electronic nose can also be useful for anosmic people as it can inform them in case of nearby toxic gas leak or fire.
