Will the University match my donation?

The University is committed to matching all gifts from staff through the Staff Giving program to support student scholarships. However, the University is unable to match gifts in support of the other charity partners at this time.

Will there be any change to my salary if I participate in the program using payroll?

Participating in the Staff Giving program allows you to spread your donation over the year, rather than making a larger one-off donation. Your gross salary remains unchanged and the donation is deducted each pay period before tax is calculated. Depending on your individual circumstances, there will be a change in your take home pay to reflect the amount of the donation and any reductions in the amount of tax withheld.

What are the tax implications?

Regular giving via payroll: Depending on the amount donated each pay period you may have the amount of tax withheld reduced to take account of the donation made. If you require further assistance, it is recommended that you seek independent personal taxation or financial advice or visit the Australian Taxation Office for more information.

Depending on the amount donated each pay period you may have the amount of tax withheld reduced to take account of the donation made. For example, a donation of $10 per fortnight from a gross annual salary of $55,000 may result in a tax saving of $4.  See the  ATO Tax Table for Workplace Giving (opens in a new window) to calculate your savings.

Giving outside of payroll:  Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible and can be accounted for during your tax lodgement if you give using payment methods other than payroll. Western Sydney University provides receipts for donations which can be used to calculate your tax deductibility.

What happens when it is time to lodge my tax return?

A total of your yearly pre-tax salary contributions will appear on your annual payment summary/Group Certificate if you have chosen to use payroll giving.

Staff who give outside of payroll are able to claim tax deductibility based on receipts received for donations made in a given tax year.

Will my donations be confidential?

The University appreciates the opportunity to recognise the support of all donors but you can chose to remain anonymous.

Can I make a one-off donation?

To make a one-off donation click here.

Can I support an organisation not included in the program?

Staff are of course able to make contributions to other organisations via their own means, however, only the organisations listed as participating in the program can be supported through workplace giving.

To ensure the program can have meaningful impact on the organisations being supported, a minimum number of staff supporters will be needed before a new beneficiary can be added to the program. The minimum number of supporters required for this is 15.

To remain in line with our mission to be a student centred University, the number of internal funds available for Staff Giving should match the number of external charity partners supported.

Can casual employees make regular contributions through workplace giving?

Unfortunately it is not possible to set up regular payroll deductions of any kind for casual employees due to the irregular nature of casual work. However, casual staff can make a one-off payroll donation by completing the Casual Staff Giving form available by clicking here.

Staff also have the option to make regular contributions using credit card. To make a regular donation via credit card click here.
