Crescent Foundation partnership

Western Sydney University and Crescent Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding which confirms three scholarships.

Talal Yassine, OAM is on a mission. The Managing Director of Crescent Wealth and Secretary of Crescent Foundation is partnering with Western Sydney University to support refugee scholarships - and he wants to bring the whole Western Sydney community along for the ride.

Western Sydney University and Crescent Foundation recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding which confirms three scholarships from 2017, valued at $7500 per year for three years, with the intention to quickly grow the program through community support to provide for many more students in future years.

"I believe that education is the single most important factor in assisting refugees in a caring and nurturing environment, to be the best they can be," Mr Yassine said.

"Crescent Foundation has embarked on this journey, partnering with Western Sydney University, with a vision of providing a sustainable way to ensure real impact on the lives of refugees."

"My hope is that by providing leadership in this area, alongside the University, we will be able to work with others in the community to ensure that we can look to fund at least 20 scholarships per year for many years to come."

Professor Barney Glover, Vice-Chancellor and President of Western Sydney University said that the leadership and commitment shown by Mr Yassine and Crescent Foundation sets a benchmark for others in the community.

"Western Sydney University made a commitment to create the Refugee Scholarships Fund in September 2015, and at the time we called on the community to help us build ongoing capacity. We are thrilled that Talal and Crescent Foundation have responded to this call."

"The Crescent Foundation Leadership Scholarships for refugee students will be a way that we can provide practical assistance to students who have already been through so much. I applaud the commitment that the Crescent Foundation has made and the leadership they are showing in this area."

Western Sydney University has more students from refugee backgrounds than any other higher education institute in Australia and the Western Sydney community will settle at least 4,000 of Australia's additional intake of 12,000 refugees. It will be the largest single resettlement of Middle Eastern refugees in the state's history.

A scholarship of around $7,500 a year can ease the financial burden of gaining an education. It can allow a student to be self-sufficient and, with an education, these skilled and talented people can go on to make a difference to our community and our country.
