Mental Health First Aid FAQ

What is the program format?

This is a 12 hour program, which includes small group work, videos, games and exercises and resources to assist in developing your understanding of the impact of mental illness, recognise early warning signs and how to provide assistance. Program participants receive a copy of the MHFA Manual, a Certificate of Completion and/or Accreditation along with numerous community resources.

Who can attend?

The program is open to all staff, academic and professional, inclusive of all roles and functions and is particularly valuable for all staff who deal with students.

What if I can't attend all the sessions?

The MHFA Certificate of Completion can only be given to those who complete all sessions of the program. If sessions are missed for any reason, you can make up the missed sessions by attending another program. This can be arranged with the MHFA Administration Officer at mhfa@westernsydney.edu.au.

How effective is the program?

Evaluations have consistently shown that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses and their treatments, knowledge of appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. To find out more about these evaluations and statistics please visit the Mental Health First Aid website. (opens in a new window)

Is the MHFA program accredited?

MHFA programs have not been mapped in NTIS and program participants do not receive an accredited statement of attainment. MHFA International has an ongoing research program to develop and maintain MHFA Guidelines for Australia. To be an 'Accredited' MHFAider means a MHFA program participant who passes the exam is accredited against these guidelines. It is similar to the way National First Aid Standards are held by the Australian Resuscitation Council.

Do I have to update this training?

On completion of the program you receive a Certificate of Completion. You also have the opportunity to complete an online accreditation exam in order to become and Accredited MHFAider. This accreditation is valid for three years and a refresher program needs to be completed to maintain your accreditation.

Who are the trainers?

The trainers at Western Sydney University are experienced counsellors who have many years of experience in the mental health sector. They have a strong commitment to the provision of mental health training to the community.
