OneNote and the web

With OneNote you can store, sync or share your workbooks on the Web, using SkyDrive (Microsoft’s Cloud Storage). This way you will always have access to your files provided you can get an internet connection.
There are two ways of doing this; when you first create a new Notebook or to an existing Notebook.

Requirements

You need to have a SkyDrive account to store your information on-line. You can sign up when you access this the first time.

To create a new Notebook

  • From the File tab, and then click New and a Dialog box opens. See Figure 1
  • Under 1. Store Notebook on: choose Web
  • Under 2. Name: Enter your Notebook name.
  • Under 3. Web Location: it should read Microsoft SkyDrive.
  • If you have an account, click the Sign in button and log into Skydrive.
  • If you don’t have an account you can use the Sign Up for Microsoft SkyDrive link.

When you have been connected the 3. Web Location: changes. See Figure 2

NewNotebook

  • Select a location for the folders in SkyDrive (Documents by default).
  • Click the Create Notebook button.
  • When finished a dialog box opens (See Figure 3) asking if you want to share your workbook.
  • To share with someone, click the E-Mail a Link button
  • If not click the No, Thanks button.
If the notebook is not in the OneNote 2010 file format, OneNote prompts you to upgrade it. Click Upgrade, and then in the Notebook Properties dialog box click Convert to 2010. Click OK at the prompt that warns you that users of a previous version of OneNote will not be able to share the notebook. Anyone with a previous version of OneNote will be able to share the notebook using OneNote Web App in SkyDrive.

To share an existing Notebook

You can share an existing OneNote notebook with other people, using SkyDrive

  • In OneNote, from the File tab, and click Share.
  • Under 1. Select notebook: choose the notebook you want to save.
  • Under 2. Share on: choose Web.
  • Under 3. Web Location: click the Sign In button and log into Skydrive.
When finished a dialog box opens asking if you want to share your workbook.
  • To share with someone, click the E-Mail a Link button
  • If not click the No, Thanks button.
  • Enter your ID and password, and click OK.
The notebook is now saved in SkyDrive.

Using SkyDrive

When your notebooks are stored in the cloud, you can sign in to SkyDrive using a browser and open the notebooks.
You can also use OneNote Mobile (available for many types of cell phones and tablets) to view and edit your notes when you’re on the go.

To Open SkyDrive

  • Open the SkyDrive site and Sign in https://skydrive.live.com/
  • If you don’t have a Microsoft login you can join here.
  • When SkyDrive opens you can see three default folders, Documents, Pictures and Public. (Diagram shown in Thumbnail View)
  • Your OneNote Notebook should be stored in the Documents folder.
