Closing a laptop lid

There are settings that allow you to change what happens when you close the lid of a Laptop. You can Close Down, put the Laptop into Hibernate mode or simply Do Nothing.

For example, if you use a separate Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse and set the close to
Do Nothing, then after you boot up you can close the lid and continue working, without the distraction of a second smaller screen. Following are the settings in Win7 & Vista.

Win 7

  1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel
  2. Make sure the View by: (top right) is set to Category
  3. Click System and Security
  4. Choose Power Options
  5. Click on Choose what closing the lid does in the left pane
  6. Next to When I close the lid: choose an option from the list
  7. Click Save Changes

Vista

  1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel
  2. Make sure Classic View (Top left) is chosen
  3. Choose Power Options
  4. Click on Choose what closing the lid does in the left pane
  5. Next to When I close the lid: choose an option from the list in both categories
  6. Click Save Changes
