Cross Cultural Health Research Award 2019

Applications are now open for the 2019 Cross Cultural Public Health Research Award. This year there are 2 awards available for the following categories:

  1. Health issues affecting Indigenous Australians
  2. Health issues affecting refugees or recently arrived migrants to Australia

The awards for both categories are worth $5,000 in total and may be allocated to one or more applicants.

This award supports a candidate for the degrees of Master (by research), PhD, MD or professional doctorate in the School of Public Health at The University of Sydney, or at Western Sydney University to support research on public health issues affecting Indigenous Australians, refugees or recently arrived migrants to Australia.

About the Award

This award was established by Professor Janice Reid, formerly of the University of Sydney’s School of Public Health and Community Medicine and Vice-Chancellor at Western Sydney University. While at the University, Professor Reid published two highly successful books: The Health of Immigrant Australia (1990) and The Health of Aboriginal Australia (1991). The award is funded by the donation of royalties from these two books by the editors and authors.

Provided there is a candidate of sufficient merit, the Award is made annually by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health, at The University of Sydney. The award is made on the recommendation of the Head of School, Sydney School of Public Health (Usyd) to a candidate for the degrees of Master (by research), PhD, MD or professional doctorate in the School of Public Health at The University of Sydney, or at Western Sydney University, to support research on public health issues affecting Indigenous Australians, refugees or recently arrived migrants to Australia.

Assessment of applications

Applications will be assessed, and a recommendation made by a panel of two academics, one nominated by the Research Committee of the Sydney School of Public Health at The University of Sydney and one nominated by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Western Sydney University.

Value of Award

In 2019 funding for the Cross Cultural Public Health Research Award will be based on the following funding categories:

  1. $5000 will be available to fund a project on health issues affecting Indigenous Australians, and
  2. $5000 will be available to fund a project on health issues affecting refugees or recently arrived migrants to Australia.

In the event there is more than one application, of sufficient merit, per funding category, the selection panel may choose to allocate the award amount to one or more applicants (i.e. split the value). Where no applications are received for either category 1) or 2), the funding may be allocated in part or full, to the other category, at the discretion of the selection panel, based on the strength of applications received.

Criteria for assessment

  1. Academic merit and research potential (taking into account the applicant’s career stage) as assessed from:
    • Number of publications published or in press and/or marks for any coursework subjects completed
    • Progress with research since degree commenced
    • Quality and relevance of the research proposal
  2. Financial need as assessed from information provided by the applicant regarding:
    • The difference the award would make to their ability to undertake their research
    • Other sources of funding they have received
    • Attempts they have made to acquire other sources of funding
  3. Candidature conditions:
    • Must be an enrolled students in a degree of Master (by research), PhD, MD or professional doctorate within the School of Public Health at The University of Sydney, or, public health related department (medicine, health, health science) at Western Sydney University.
    • Research being undertaken by candidate must be aiming to support research on public
      health issues affecting Indigenous Australians, refugees or recently arrived migrants to Australia
  4. Equity and Fairness:
    • Students who were successfully awarded from this scheme in the last calendar year will be ranked lower than those who have not been funded.

Conditions of award

  • The award is open to full and part-time students
  • The award is open to scholarship and non-scholarship holders
  • The award is open to both domestic and international students
  • The award is tenable for one year only, but a student may apply again in a subsequent round
  • The award shall be offered annually
  • More than one award may be made in any one year
  • A report must be submitted to the Head of the Sydney School of Public Health at The University of Sydney within 12 months of the award being granted.

  • publications or evidence that publications have been accepted (first page or abstracts only)
  • a letter of support from the student’s supervisor confirming progress to date, and
  • evidence of other sources of research funding received or applied for.
