Bio:

Ayah Abubasheer is an Associate Lecturer at the School of Social Sciences, Western Sydney University. She earned her PhD from the Australian Catholic University in 2022, where she joined the Institute for Social Justice. Ayah completed her Master of Global Politics (Global Civil Society) at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2012. From 2012 to 2017, she collaborated with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and various international and non-governmental organizations on advocacy and community development projects in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Since 2018, Ayah has held research positions at Australian universities, including Western Sydney University and the University of Technology Sydney. Her teaching areas span sociology, politics, social work, policy and advocacy, and communication programs. Additionally, she has contributed to research with Australian civil society organizations, notably the Edmund Rice Centre. Ayah is currently focused on publishing her book, which explores Islam, Politics, and Women in the Gaza Strip.

Research interests include:

Sociology of Islam; Middle Eastern Politics; Politics of Knowledge and Representation of the Arab and Muslim Worlds; Dynamics of Gender, Culture, and the Question of Human and Women’s Rights; Migration, Identity, and Border Studies; Policy and Advocacy; and Decolonial Thought.
