Collaboration hits a high note for children’s literacy
Western Sydney University has collaborated with the early literacy initiative Paint Liverpool REaD (PLR) and Sing&Grow (Playgroup Queensland) on a song to accompany a new animation promoting literacy among young children in the South West.
Paint Liverpool REaD – whose mission is to spread the early literacy message of ‘talk, sing, read and play with your child every day from birth’ to children and their families — recorded the song at the School of Humanities and Communication Arts’ professional music recording studio at the University’s Kingswood campus.
Established as the local expression of the national Paint the Town REaD (PTTR) initiative, Paint Liverpool REaD is facilitated by a consortium of early childhood and community service providers from across the government and not-for-profit sectors in the Liverpool LGA. With funding for the initiative largely derived from in-kind contributions from member agencies, additional financial support for the ‘GoGo’ animated storybook for which the song has been produced, have been provided under the Commonwealth Government funded Communities for Children (C4C) programme in the 2168 postcode of Liverpool.
Written by community-driven music therapy project and C4C Community Partner, Sing&Grow (Playgroup Queensland), the song features Master of Creative Music Therapy student, Isaac Grouse, on guitar and the vocals of a local primary school student. Liverpool REaD’s mascot — GoGo the Gecko — even made an appearance at the studio.
Isaac said the recording was a lot of fun and you should never underestimate the impact and benefits of playing music together.
“Music is a wonderful way to bring people together and connect with others in a way that can be so deep. Community-based learning programs like Paint Liverpool REaD really encourage playing music with your children to strengthen those parent-children relationships,” said Isaac.
Professor Peter Hutchings, Dean, School of Humanities and Communication Arts, welcomed the collaboration and said: “The School is pleased to support the important work of this organisation through our facilities and through Isaac’s contribution.”
Paint Liverpool REaD spokesperson Andrea Guinta said: “The Paint Liverpool REaD working group are always looking for new partnerships to support us in increasing the awareness of the importance of early literacy to families with young children. Working with Western Sydney University on this project was truly invaluable and we are so appreciative.”
Paint the Town REaD (PTTR) is a community based early literacy strategy that aims to help support children’s early literacy development so that they are ready to learn to read and write when they start school. PTTR started in Parkes, NSW during the 1990s and now exists in over 70 towns and local government areas across Australia.
