One of the world's foremost experts on Eastern Europe will explore the history of Ukraine and in the process examine Russian claims to the region at a special Open Forum at the University of Western Sydney.

The author of the best-selling books Europe East & West and Europe: A History, Professor Norman Davies will present Open Forum: Ukraine, not just a province of Russia, at the UWS Parramatta campus on March 27.

At the Open Forum, Professor Davis will present an informed historical analysis to better understand the complexity of Ukrainian nationhood and identity.

The Former Human Rights Commissioner and Director of Equity and Diversity Dr Sev Ozdowski OAM will act as MC for the evening.

"The situation in Ukraine is of major concern to Australia and the rest of the world as it has the potential to threaten global peace," says Dr Ozdowski.

"Our thoughts go out to Australians of Ukrainian origin with family overseas, and we warmly invite them and those who take an interest in the latest actions by Russia to hear what the future may hold."

Professor Norman Davies is Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge University. He was awarded the CMG in 2001 for 'services to history', and has collected several Polish distinctions including the Order of Merit.
