Open Forum: Do we need disability insurance?
A special University of Western Sydney Open Forum will examine Australia's planned national disability insurance scheme.
The forum, Do we need disability insurance?, will be held at the UWS Parramatta Campus on 20 September 2012 at 6pm.
A trial scheme to provide support for people with a disability and their carers is set to be introduced in Australia next year, with the aim rolling it out across the country by the end of the decade.
Joining the debate are two Australians who have dedicated themselves to helping people with disabilities by working with employers, trainers and customers.
Dr Mark Bagshaw is the Managing Director of the Innov8 Consulting Group. Mark is the Co-founder and Chairman of the Ability Australia Foundation, the Chairman of Humanitech and the Vice-patron of Technical Aid for the Disabled.
Suzanne Colbert AM is founding Chief Executive of the Australian Network on Disability (AND), which is funded and lead by its more than 120 private and public sector organisations to help welcome people with disability as employees, customers and stakeholders.
Former Australian Disability Discrimination Commissioner and Director of Equity and Diversity at UWS, Dr Sev Ozdowski OAM, will act as MC for the evening.
"Australia has one of the best legislative systems do deal with disability discrimination based on the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and associated Disability Standards, and it's very encouraging to see movement on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)," says Dr Ozdowski.
"Everyone in Australia deserves the chance to live a happy and healthy life, and it will be interesting to hear how a national scheme will positively change so many lives for the better."
The 2012 Open Forum Seminars, which run throughout the year, are hosted by UWS Equity and Diversity.
The series cover contentious and topical social issues and help bring the UWS academic and the Greater Sydney communities together for rigorous debate.
