Scholarship helps food science graduate achieve her dream

Regan Handley's graduation day was nothing short of a surreal moment, marking the start of an exciting career in the field of food science.

The proud recipient of the Hawkesbury Foundation Food Scholarship (now called the George Bennett Memorial Food Scholarship in Science), she moved onto the Hawkesbury campus from her hometown of Goulburn with support from the scholarship, setting her on the path to pursuing her dream degree.

“The Hawkesbury Foundation is happy and proud to support a number of Western students through scholarships each year, including Hawkesbury Foundation Food Scholarship recipient Regan Handley,” said Brian Lindsay, UWS Hawkesbury Foundation Ltd.

Regan said she was "incredibly grateful to receive the Hawkesbury Foundation Food Scholarship which made the transition to University significantly easier and allowed me to focus on my studies without having to worry about expenses.”

“Higher education has given me the opportunity to follow my passion of being a food scientist. Without this degree, I would not be able to do something I love every day".

During her time at Western Sydney University, her passion for food science was further ignited, and she felt privileged to secure a position as a quality control technician while studying.

“I chose to study at Western Sydney University because I felt that my idea of a university environment and experience aligned with the values of the University and the incredible graduate employment rate confirmed my decision.”

After graduating from the Bachelor of Science (Nutrition and Food Science), Regan hopes to continue growing her professional career in a sector she loves.

“I am so passionate about food science and nutrition because I find it so interesting how we as humans can fuel our lives using food and how amazing it is to be able to create and test food products for other people to enjoy.”

One of Regan’s proudest moments at university was her role as a Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) Facilitator for Microbiology.

“It was incredibly fulfilling being able to assist my peers with their microbiology unit work and provided me with a great sense of community.”

“There are some incredible facilities and support services provided at Western Sydney University, including the PASS program and free student breakfast.

“I would like to thank Western Sydney University for making my university experience so enjoyable and for equipping me with the tools I need to face the working world.”
