University Medallist Kylie Brice

Kylie Brice

Kylie Brice was awarded a University Medal when she graduated at the University of Western Sydney's Spring ceremonies on 26 September, with a Bachelor of Science (Honours).

After high school, Kylie became a hairdresser and did that for a few years before she decided that she wanted to change career paths.

Her husband suggested that since she has a love of animals, that she apply to do a degree in animal science. She applied to UWS and didn’t look back.

Kylie did so well at her studies that she swapped over to the Bachelor of Science majoring in Animal Science and continued to do an honours year.

“I was really shocked that I did so well. When I started my degree it had been awhile since I had studied and I wasn’t sure that I could handle the workload.”

For her honours project, Kylie looked at immunology in marsupials.

“Marsupial young are born with an immature immune system and as a consequence many die when exposed to pathogens within the pouch," says Kylie.

"My research identified 4 immunological markers which hopefully will contribute to the long term conservation efforts of marsupials."

Since finishing her degree, Kylie has her sights set on a PhD at UWS.
