University Medallist Benjamin Southwell

Benjamin Southwell was awarded a University Medal when he graduated at the University of Western Sydney's Spring ceremonies on 26 September with a Bachelor of Engineering (Robotics and Mechatronics).

Before Ben started his degree at UWS, he spent a few years working in the electrical trade. It became obvious that if he was going to become an engineer like he planned, he needed to complete a university degree.

“I am glad that I spent a few years in between high school and university in the workforce to actually find out what area I wanted a career in,” says Ben.

“UWS was one of the first universities to offer mechatronics, I had heard they had a good robotic lab and were big on the practical side of things, so I applied and got in.”

Ben credits his honours thesis as being a highlight during his career.

“I loved being able to complete a thesis on something that I was really interested in. It was difficult and stressful, but extremely rewarding to be able to combine everything I had learnt during my degree and implement it.”

Ben is now working in the engineering industry and hopes to work overseas for most of next year.

“I would like to complete a PhD in the future, but there are a few things I would like to do before I go back to study.”
