UWS Community Scholarships - Rosemary Hawkins

Rosemary Hawkins, resident of Kurrajong, is in her third year of the Bachelor of Arts at the University of Western Sydney’s Kingswood campus.

Rosemary is majoring in ‘English text and writing’ and is extremely passionate about study. She is a single mum of five and decided to return to study after raising her children.

“When my husband died I knew I needed a focus and I thought I would attempt to get into university. My goals are to pursue my writing career and to get involved in mature age education.”

Initially, studying at university was a huge learning curve for Rosemary, however over the years she has adjusted and her children understand that she needs study time too.

“Every opportunity I have I take my children to the UWS library to become familiar with the university environment so they know that one day getting accepted into university will be achievable for them too.”

In the upcoming second semester of 2012, Rosemary will feel the full benefit of the UWS Community Scholarship 2012.

“Receiving a scholarship certainly helps with the financial cost of books and travel. It will also enable me to do some extra courses in my area of interest – writing.”

“I feel honoured to be chosen – it feels like my journey is being validated.”

Rosemary chose to study at UWS as it was in her local area and was easily accessible, and furthering her education means a lot to her.

“Being at university is a dream come true. The scholarship will be a huge boost to my morale and will enable me to continue to do honours.”
