About the Event

In recent years there has been a surge in targeted mis- and disinformation campaigns against cultural minority groups in Australia. The pandemic and associated uncertainties have exacerbated this problem. During this time, culturally diverse communities have been targeted in disinformation attacks that have been, at times, anti-religious, anti-immigrant, xenophobic, misogynist, ideologically extreme, deliberately misleading, or conspiratorial. Yet the impact of these misinformation narratives and responses to them has thus far received too little attention in Australia. This research-based roundtable event aims to examine some of the dominant misinformation and disinformation challenges faced by Indian communities in Australia and explore potential solutions that could be developed through interactions between researchers, journalists, the private sector, the non-profit sector and citizens.

Using the Indian context as a case study, this roundtable aims to map major mis/disinformation challenges faced by multicultural Indian communities in Australia and to consider what tools and initiatives have been effective in helping communities fight information vulnerabilities in Australia.

Outline of the Discussion

The roundtable discussion is divided into four parts: (1) Framing this issue: Mis- and disinformation that targets Indian diaspora in Australia; (2)Mis- and disinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic; (3) Australian and international mis/disinformation approaches and fact-checking initiatives; (4) Partnerships and Solutions: Group Discussion. Each session will have a brief presentation followed by a group discussion on key points by the participants of the roundtable.
