Credit for Prior Learning (Advanced Standing)

What is Credit for Prior Learning?

Credit for Prior Learning is recognition of prior learning in terms of experience and/or studies. When you apply for Credit for Prior Learning, we will assess your prior learning and may award you Credit for Prior Learning in the program in which you are currently studying in recognition of what you have achieved.

At Western Sydney University, we have two types of credit for previous study:

  • Pathways credit – if you have completed a Diploma or Advanced Diploma that is listed as an approved Western Sydney University Tertiary Education Pathway, you may be eligible to claim Pathways credit. Find out if you're in a Western Sydney University Tertiary Education Pathway and claim your pathways credit online
  • Credit for Prior Learning – if you have completed any previous study (Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Degree level) which is not a recognised pathway as above

How are applications assessed?

Your application will be assessed by the relevant academic staff and the outcome will be reported back to the relevant Student Administration unit, who will process your application. If Credit for Prior Learning has been granted your student record will be adjusted accordingly and if necessary any fees will be adjusted. An email will be sent to your student email account notifying you of the outcome of your application.

How long will it take for my application to be processed?

The time it takes to process your application depends on the complexity of your application and the workload of the academic staff at the time. Under normal circumstances, you could expect to know the outcome of your application within five weeks. If you haven't received information within this period you can email Advanced Standing at advancedstanding@westernsydney.edu.au.

What do I need to do if my application is successful?

If Credit for Prior Learning has been granted your student record will be adjusted accordingly and if necessary any fees will be adjusted. You may need to register in additional subjects or change your registrations, which you can do via MySR.
  • If you are an International Student studying while on a Student Visa, the Credit for Prior Learning you are granted may reduce the duration of your studies and this will require an adjustment to your Student Visa duration.
  • How can I view my Credit for Prior Learning in MySR?

If your application is successful you can view your Credit for Prior Learning in your student record by following these steps:
    1. Log into MySR
    2. Click on 'View My Degree Audit'
    3. Your Credit for Prior Learning will be listed

Will Credit for Prior Learning affect my study load?

Yes, it can affect your study load. If you are receiving a benefit from Centrelink you may be affected if your study load reduces from a full-time load to a part-time load. It may be necessary to register in additional subjects. If this happens, you are able to register in subjects online in MySR. Please note you can not register into subjects after the second week of the teaching term without academic approval. To do this, you will need to submit a Rule Waiver form

If you are an International student, it is a visa requirement that you maintain a full study load and granted Credit for Prior Learning may affect your visa. You should seek advice from the International Student Advisor on your home campus.

I am an International Student how does Credit for Prior Learning affect my Student Visa?

If you are an International Student studying while on a Student Visa and you receive Credit for Prior Learning that reduces the duration of your program, this will mean your Student Visa duration will also be reduced. Not all Credit for Prior Learning will mean your program duration is reduced. In some cases, the Credit for Prior Learning may be for electives that you take over the full length of your program so you will still need to study for the same number of terms, just in less subjects in some of the terms. There are 3 times you might apply for and receive Credit for Prior Learning:

  • 1. You apply for and receive Credit for Prior Learning as part of the admission process. Your course duration will be adjusted in your offer letter and your COE issued for the adjusted course duration
  • 2. You apply for and receive Credit for Prior Learning after you have received your offer and before you start your program. You will receive a new offer letter and your COE will be adjusted
  • 3. You start your program and then apply for and receive Credit for Prior Learning. Your visa duration will be reduced. If your visa is affected in these circumstances, this will be communicated with you and you will need to agree to this change before the Credit for Prior Learning is added to your record and your visa duration changed.

Your appeal will be heard by the Appeals Committee within 4 weeks of the date of lodging your appeal and you will receive notification as soon as possible. This decision is final.
