New transport fuels from algae (PDF File 127.9 KB) (opens in a new window)
Dr Nguyen Tran, Dr Kamali Kannangara, Professor John Bartlett and Dr Adriyan Milev from the School of Natural Sciences with Emeritus Professor Mick Wilson are working to establish a new hybrid technology for generating transport fuels from algae. This research is supported by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) through its Flagship Collaboration Research Fund.

Dr Ricky Spencer from the School of Natural Sciences has been investigating the distribution, abundance and habitat preferences of feral Indian Myna birds in urban areas. This research is funded by Blacktown City Council.

Professor Kevin Dunn from the School of Social Sciences and a team of researchers are developing strategies for locally based anti-racism initiatives. This cross-disciplinary research has been funded by an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant with the Australian Human Rights Commission, the Equal Opportunity Commission of South Australia and the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission.

Professor David Rowe and colleagues from the Centre for Cultural Research and Advanced Cultural Studies Institute of Sweden researchers at Linköping University, Sweden, are investigating the interfaces of culturalisation and globalisation. This research is funded by the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education under its Institutional Grants Program for the total amount of 1,600,000 SEK.

Dr Julie Old, Dr Ricky Spencer and Mr Jack Wolfenden from the School of Natural Sciences are investigating biodiversity in the Wolgan Valley of NSW and the effects of a 'predator-proof' fence in controlling the impact of feral animals on the native fauna population. This research was funded by Emirates Hotels (Australia) Pty Ltd.

Professor Michael Singh from the Centre for Educational Research with Dr Jinge Han from Charles Sturt University are determining how to extend the argumentative capabilities of Chinese Higher Degree Research students in their research studies. This research was funded through an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant.

Professor Michael Singh and Associate Professor Wayne Sawyer from the Centre for Educational Research have been investigating the efficacy of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in choosing potentially successful students for teacher education courses. This research was funded by International English Language Testing System Australia Pty Ltd.

Associate Professor Janice Aldrich-Wright and Professor William S. Price of the Nanoscale Organisation and Dynamics Group from the School of Biomedical and Health Sciences in collaboration with researchers at the University of Warwick are investigating the development of anticancer and antibacterial agents. This research was funded by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research as part of the International Science Linkages program.

Dr Leigh Sheppard from the School of Natural Sciences has been awarded a five-year Australian Research Fellowship to continue his research program on the development of Solar-Hydrogen technology. Dr Sheppard will work in collaboration with Professor Eric Wachsman, Director of the Florida Institute for Sustainable Energy and the US Department of Energy High Temperature Electrochemistry Center.

Associate Professor Natalie Bolzan and Dr Frances Gale from the Centre for Social Justice and Social Change have been investigating the improvement in social resilience of marginalised young rural people as a result of youth-initiated community-based programs. This research was funded by the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet and builds on work started in an Australian Research Council project.

Ms Leanne Humphreys from the School of Psychology, along with other UWS researchers, has been developing an audiovisual clinical skills assessment tool (CSAT) to evaluate the competence of psychology student-interns in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). This research was funded by the NSW Psychologists Registration Board.

Professor Gail Jones from the Writing and Society Research Group in the College of Arts is investigating approaches to developing and implementing literary translation best practice and increasing the number of quality translated works from English to Chinese and Chinese to English. This research is supported by the Australia Council for the Arts.

Associate Professor Vincent Higgins from the Nanoscale Organisation and Dynamics Group, together with Dr Peter Rogers from Carlton and United Breweries have been awarded a UWS Research Partnership Program grant to examine the effects of hop extracts on the metabolism and viability of industrial yeasts and relate these effects to commercial opportunity.
