The Board of Trustees met on 21 February 2018 in the Boardroom, Building EB, Parramatta South campus.  A summary of matters discussed in the open session is provided below.

Chancellor’s Report
The Chancellor advised the Board about a number of issues. The Chancellor spoke to the launch of the State of the World’s Children Companion with UNICEF.  He also spoke of his attendance at the Western Sydney Community Forum with the Premier and indicated that he had presented a personal scholarship to a Western Sydney University student working in the community sector.

Vice-Chancellor’s Report
The Vice-Chancellor spoke to the status of the Federal Government’s freeze on Commonwealth Grant Scheme funding for 2018-2019.  The Vice-Chancellor also provided updates on the Catalyst West event to be held on 28 February 2018, the finalisation of senior positions and TEQSA awarding the International College unconditional Higher Education Provider status.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Policy
The Board of Trustees approved the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Policy.

The National Institute of Complementary Medicine Institute Status Update Report
The Board of Trustees approved the National Institute of Complementary Medicine Institute to be designated as a University Research Institute.

The Writing and Society Research Centre
Centre Director, Professor Anthony Uhlmann, attended the meeting to provide Board members with an overview of The Writing and Society Research Centre.  Professor Uhlmann highlighted the funding received from the Australian Research Council, funding for the Sydney Review of Books and the engagement projects with disadvantaged young people from Western Sydney. Professor Uhlmann spoke about the importance of International Engagement.

Academic Senate Update
The Chair of Academic Senate spoke to a number of matters, including the upcoming independent review of Academic Senate.  This review will satisfy the requirements under Standard 6.1.3(d) of the Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standards) 2015 for universities to conduct a periodic independent review of the academic governance process.
