Women in Mathematics Day 2022

Western's Women in Mathematics Day will be held on the 12th of May to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women active in Mathematics.  This hybrid online and in person event consists of several invited talks given by mathematicians active in Western Sydney and other institutes in Australia and celebrates the birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani, who was an Iranian mathematician and a Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University, and the first and the only woman to win the Fields medal.

Transport Options
Parramatta rail station is only a few minutes walk from the Parramatta City campus (PC-01, Peter Shergold building) and is your best option for getting here.
If you're coming by car there is no dedicated parking for the PC-01 campus but the nearest secure parking station is at the Parramatta Station Car Park, located at 17 Wentworth Street, Parramatta. This carpark is open 24 hours and is an approximate 5 minute walk.

Guest speaker bios Cheryl Praeger – University of Western Australia Cheryl Praeger is currently Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Western Australia. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, former president of the Australian Mathematical Society (1992 – 1994 and first female President of the society). She was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in 1999 and promoted to Companion in 2021. She has published widely and has advised 27 PhD students. Natalie Thamwattana – University of Newcastle Natalie Thamwattana is a Professor of Applied Mathematics in the School of Information and Physical Sciences, Newcastle University. Her impact to the applied mathematics discipline is evidenced by the award of the 2014 Australia and New Zealand Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ANZIAM)’s JH Michell Medal as the outstanding researcher for the year and the 2014 University of Wollongong’s Vice Chancellor Emerging Researchers Excellence Award. Susan Wei – University of Melbourne Susan Wei is a lecturer in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Melbourne. She currently holds a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) from the Australian Research Council (ARC). She received her BA from the University of California. Berkley and her PhD in Statistics from University of North Carolina, Chape3l Hill.
